Why Fit Testing?

To comply with AS/NZS 1715:2009, anyone required to wear a respirator such as a disposable filtering facepiece (N95/P2), reusable half-face mask or reusable full-face respirator should be fit tested to ensure they achieve an appropriate seal and are adequately protected.

Without fit testing, there’s no way of knowing if the mask is providing its stated level of protection for the wearer.

If you want peace of mind knowing that you're doing everything you can to keep your employees safe and feel confident knowing you're complying with work health and safety laws, get in touch with us to schedule fit testing right at your workplace or in our office.

What Does
WorkSafe Victoria Say?

All employers, regardless of the industry, must provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and free of risks to health, so far as is reasonably practicable.

WorkSafe Victoria notes on their website that "Fit testing should be conducted prior to the need to use a respirator so that a suitable respirator can be identified for the wearer. Fit testing is an important part of a respiratory protection program per AS/NZS 1715:2009."

Safe Work Australia also notes that "Workers should pass a respirator fit test before they first start wearing a tight-fitting respirator including disposable respirators and reusable half-face or full-face respirators."

Both qualitative and quantitative fit test methods are acceptable for N95/P2 disposable respirators and half-face respirators. Full-face respirators must be tested using the quantitative fit test method only.

What Does the
National Health and Medical Research Council Say?

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infections in Healthcare 2019 state that for N95/P2 masks to offer maximum protection, the wearer must be properly fitted and trained to safely use these masks.

The guidelines note that fit testing is a requirement in line with the AS/NZS 1715:2009. Both qualitative and quantitative fit testing methods are valid and approved methods for healthcare and aged care workers wearing N95/P2 respirators.

Fit testing not only gives your employees peace of mind knowing that everything is being done to protect their safety, but this additional measure ensures employers are meeting their obligations under OHS regulations as well as adhering to the NHMRC guidelines.
